In the year of 1935, Elder L.C. Carter came to Phoenix from Ponca City, Oklahoma hoping to establish a church in the city. With the permission of then Overseer J.W. Taylor, Elder Carter began a small mission located on West.. Lincoln Street which consisted of his wife, Sister
Willie Carter, Brother and Sister Ollie Fuller and Brother Chester Henry. In the following year, 1936, the Lord added to the church, Sister Blanch Wright, who moved from Enid, Oklahoma, Sister Ella Thompson, Sister Ardella Thompson, Sister Sally Mae Phillips, and later Mother
Phillips and other family members who united united with the small church. After about three years, Elder Carter decided that he would move In California and some of the members followed him there. The Lord blessed those that remained to keep the church doors open.
Church History
In the fall of 1938, Overseer Taylor sent Elder King to pastor the church. After three years and the congregation remaining small in number, Elder King thought they should move to another location . He purchased property located in the 1300 block of West Sherman, and a small wood
frame building was constructed. In that same year Elder E.E. Cleveland was sent to Phoenix by God. He conducted a revival for Church No. 2 where he met Elder King. The late Mother Cleo Hicks united with the church during this same time. Our pastor felt that greater things needed
to be done, so he began another building project. The struggle became very difficult but through faith and belief that God was in the plan, Elder King continued with the vision that God gave him. Elder King saw our present location and with great faith and no money, he encouraged the saints to exercise their faith . The pastor put on a rally where he asked ten members to raise $100. The saints were able to do just that with the help of the lord.
Because of the difficulty in conducting the business of the church independently Elder King thought the church should be incorporated. It had been known prior as Church NO.3. The church was then incorporated as The Emmanuel Church of God in Christ Trustees were elected, namely Elder Felton King, Brother McKinley Brewer, Brother Paul Washington and Sister Blanche Wright. Shortly after that time, the property at 1537-1539 West Buckeye Road was purchased. Although the congregation has never been a large one, it has been one, especially in its early days who relied on the power of prayer and faith to accomplish what God wanted done.
After years of having tent revivals on the property, the lord blessed and added to the church. Elder King saw a building that had been moved to the property in the next block which was to be used for a bar. After negotiations with the owner of the building, a foundation was poured
and the building was moved to our current location and the Lord continues to bless.
Approximately 10 years of worshipping in that building our pastor, with a greater vision, decided it was time to build again. We began to work, pledge and give money for the new building. The foundation was poured and we began to build around the church as it was. After three more years of rallying and sacrificial giving, the pastor felt that the congregation was beginning to get weary. Once again God was in the plan and Elder King began to seek another way of finishing the bullding. After searching for ways, our pastor sought out the Hangar Construction Co, of Dallas, Texas. God was with us as they were in town to begin construction on another church. They agreed to finish our church building and we obtained financing to complete it to its present state. The completion left us with a 3O-year mortgage of about $31,000.00 and a building with an appraised value of approximately $65,000.00 in 1963. We worshipped a year and a half while in construction on 11th Avenue and West Sherman.
In early August of 1963 God granted us a great and glorious victory when we marched from there to our present building. Some years later, we bought pews with a family rally where each family paid for a pew. We later purchased one acre west across the street from the church which was to be used at some future date and also to protect the integrity of the church. Years later with a mortgage payment of a little less than $400 a month and congregation becoming weary again, our pastor, under the inspiration of the Holy Ghost, put on a Rally and from the proceeds raised we were able to burn the mortgage on our building. We were able to raise $16,000 plus dollars that was needed to liquidate the mortgage. Another miracle occurred in our history. Approximately four years ago we replaced our refrigeration and heating system at a cost of over $20,000,00. In the past twenty years we have refurnished our church with new pews, carpet, paneling of walls, and light fixtures. Through the great vision of our pastor, we also purchased several parcels in the rear of our present property and have constructed Educational and conference facilities. Our buildings have all been completed, God has blessed us tremendously. The late Bishop Felton King led us in a f fruitful Ministry until he was called home to be with the Lord on July 27, 2004.
Bishop Leroy Anderson was the stabilizing influence for our church as pastor for over three years after the Home-Going of Bishop Felton King. He loved Emmanuel and its members and nicknamed the church "The Home of the Sweet Saints". Bishop Anderson was called home from labor to reward in April 2008.
Elder Felton E. King was appointed pastor after the passing of Bishop Anderson in 2008.
The Journey continues ... .
